Lifesaving Emergency Response Team (LERT)

LERT (Lifesaving Emergency Response Team) is an out of hours service offered by selected Victorian Surf Life Saving Clubs and Life Saving Clubs.

lertThe Barwon Heads 13th Beach Surf Life Saving Club through the LERT offers an out of normal patrol hours response service to the Victorian community.

Club members are selected to participate in this vital lifesaving service after demonstrating that they have a commitment to serve the community on a year round basis and have the necessary skills and qualifications to undertake the types of activities LERT members will be involved in.

The Club owns and operates two Sea Doo GTI-155 Rescue Water Craft (RWC), complete to Life Saving Victoria and Surf Life Saving Australia standards and operating procedures, these craft are the front line (water) rescue craft for our LERT. LERT also utilise the Club’s All Terrain Vehicle (ATV), and Inflatable Rescue Boats (IRBs) as required.

During peak summer times regular patrols are conducted along the Bellarine Coast, primarily from Bancoora to Barwon Heads. Our RWCs (Bellarine Jet Ski 3 and Bellarine Jet Ski 4) work in conjunction with the Point Lonsdale SLSC RWCs (Bellarine Jet Ski 1 and Bellarine Jet Ski 2), to form the Bellarine Support Service. This service aims to not only provide a callout service, but to regularly support and assist the work done by volunteer surf lifesavers and paid lifeguards on Bellarine patrolled beaches and to provide a limited degree of surveillance at non patrolled beaches between Queenscliff and Bancoora. Remember that the safest place to swim is always between the red and yellow flags at a patrolled beach.

Our volunteer LERT members are trained surf life savers and are either full operational members or support members. They are members of the Barwon Heads 13th Beach Surf Life Saving Club, at least 18 years of age and hold a current driver’s licence. All members undertake an induction process as well as annual in house training and education.

Full operational members undertake RWC duties and must hold a range of qualifications including the SLSA Bronze Medallion, ATV Operator Induction, SLSA Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate, SLSA First Aid Certificate, SLSA IRB Crew and IRB Driver Certificates and will either hold or be working towards gaining the SLSA RWC Operator Certificate.

Support Members provide essential assistance on shore and must hold a range of qualifications (or be in training) for awards including the SLSA Radio Operator Certificate, SLSA Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate, SLSA First Aid Certificate.
